The Conemaugh Township Volunteer Fire Department had an open house Saturday afternoon looking to recruit more firefighters.
Department President Jeff Marshall said, "We're trying to recruit because everyone's numbers are dwindling. A lot of fire departments in the area have the same problem where daytime especially there's not a lot of help like there used to be."
Firefighters said they are hoping to help lowering numbers across the state one person at a time.
"In the 1970s there were 300,000 volunteer firefighters across Pennsylvania. That number has since dropped to 38,000," fireman in Conemaugh Township Chad Knauer said. "If we can get one person in the door that wouldn't only help us, but it would help the numbers come up across Pennsylvania."
Marshall said they do not just need help putting out fires, but also with social events if that is a position someone is more likely to fill.
"The more people we get the better off the community is," Marshall said. "There would be more help available when the time comes for an emergency."
They said for more information on joining the department you can contact Knauer at (814) 244-7389 or Kathi Howrylak at (814) 242-6792.
