SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) — After Hurricane Laura left thousands of people in Louisiana without a home, some had to surrender their pets. Now, some of the animals have ended up in Western Pennsylvania due to overflowing animal shelters. Thirteen dogs are now at The Humane Society of Somerset County waiting to be adopted.
“The people have lost everything. Everything was devastated. They were really the heroes in this story because they did what was best for their pet and that was to surrender them to an organization that could give them a better life,” said shelter manager, Nancy Dantzig.
The dogs made the trip from Louisiana to Somerset with the help of PAART, Pittsburgh aviation animal rescue team. The dogs arrived at the shelter Friday, but needed some time adjusting to the changes before they can find a new home.
“They’ve gone from 90 degrees to 40 degrees and you know 1200 miles between airplane and ground travel so that’s why we gave them a week to readjust before we made the available for adoption,” explained Dantzig.
Ranging in size, breed and ages 10 weeks to one and a half years, all the dogs have their appropriate vaccinations.
“The biggest factor for me was to bring healthy dogs up here. These dogs have all been tested for heartworms and are negative which is huge because we don’t need heartworms up here,” said Dantzig.
Starting Friday, September 25, people who are looking for a furry friend can give these pups a second chance at finding a home.
“It’s a very rewarding thing and they all deserve the best and it’s not their fault. And like I said, I think the people that gave them up to have a better life are the real heroes because I know it had to be heartbreaking. Besides losing everything you have to then have to give up your pet,” said Dantzig.
