State police in Huntingdon County say an 83-year-old man is facing several felonies, accused of attempting to burn down a woman's home Monday morning with her still inside it.

According to a criminal complaint, Gary Harbst, of Huntingdon, faces numerous charges including attempted homicide, arson, aggravated assault and risking catastrophe.

Troopers say just before 8 a.m. Monday, Harbst reportedly drove his UTV from his residence along John Bum Road to the victim's home, located along the 7300 block of Fosters Road in Union Township.

Police say, according to the victim, who was inside at the time, Harbst reportedly parked the UTV outside her home and began "pounding" on the basement door.

Troopers say when the victim stepped outside, she reportedly observed her vehicle on fire and when she went back inside the home to call 911, she told police that the residence began filling with smoke.

Police say Harbst then began shooting at the woman from outside the residence before leaving the scene on his UTV.

Authorities say the victim was able to escape the burning residence.

Troopers say upon further investigation, they were able to locate Harbst at his residence where they observed a black UTV parked outside his home with multiple gas cans near by.

Police say multiple neighbors also reported witnessing Harbst near the victim's residence, as well as returning to his own home after the alleged crime.

Troopers say a search of Harbst's home led to the discovery of numerous .22 caliber shells, including a shell casing on the UTV, as well as a handwritten letter that was signed with the phrase, "I hope both houses burn down with her and I in them."

Investigators say they also found two .22 caliber spent shell casings near the victim's home.

No bail information has been listed yet for Harbst.
