SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) — After Hurricane Laura left thousands of people in Louisiana without a home, some had to surrender their pets. Now, some of the animals have ended up in Western Pennsylvania due to overflowing animal shelters. Thirteen dogs are now at The Humane Society of Somerset County waiting to be adopted.
“The people have lost everything. Everything was devastated. They were really the heroes in this story because they did what was best for their pet and that was to surrender them to an organization that could give them a better life,” said shelter manager, Nancy Dantzig.
WASHINGTON (TND) — The Internal Revenue Service is expanding its program allowing Americans to file their taxes directly with the agency for free to all 50 states and making it a permanent option after what the agency saw as a successful trial run last tax season.
A program to directly file taxes with the IRS would be a significant shift for the U.S., where a majority of taxpayers rely on paid services from private companies and has resulted in one of the highest voluntary tax compliance rates in the world.
STATE COLLEGE---Penn State running back Saquon Barkley set freshman records this past season for the Nittany Lions.
He didn't disappoint in Wednesday's final winter workout. Barkley tied a team record by squatting 500 lbs., seven times. He also bench-pressed 390 lbs. and ran a 4.38 second forty-yard dash.
"This kid is for real," Penn State Director Of Performance Enhancement Dwight Galt said after the workout.
The Nittany Lions open spring practice Friday March 18.
CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Troopers say a teenager was killed in a Clearfield County crash Tuesday that injured two others.
According to state police, the crash happened on State Route 53 south of Brewery Road in Bigler Township around 8 a.m.
Troopers say a 17-year-old was driving southbound on SR 53 when his vehicle crossed into the opposing lane and collided with another vehicle head-on causing disabling damage.
According to state police, the other vehicle’s driver and passenger were injured and taken to UPMC Altoona for treatment.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WJAC) — After 46 hours of non-stop dancing and other festivities at the Bryce Jordan Center this weekend, organizers of Penn State's THON have revealed this year's total amount raised in order to help fight childhood cancer was yet another record.
Volunteers revealed Sunday afternoon that the total raised this year is over $15 million.
Last year, THON raised $13.7 million. But next year's THON now has a new record to beat: $15,006,132.
