A new, 12,000-square-foot rock-climbing gym opened in Centre County Saturday. Or rather, it had its grand opening.

The gym Climb Nittany in Boalsburg has actually been open for two years, opening its doors originally in October 2020. Due to the pandemic limiting the amount of people indoors, they decided to wait till now to cut the ribbon. General manager Michael Molony told 6 News it was "gratifying to finally see" the place jam-packed, after a long climb to get there.

The facility itself is one for climbing-lovers of all levels, with over 10,000 square feet of climbing walls for four different climbing disciplines. Plus, there is a staggering amount of climbing handles — or "holds," as climbers call them — about 75,000 of them in their inventory.

Molony told us a big reason for launching Climb Nittany was to introduce folks to a new sport.

"The climbing community here and the outdoor community in State College and Centre County is huge and it runs very, very deep," he said. "There's a long history here and it was always something that was underrepresented in recreation opportunities."

He added that it's also "a wonderful lifetime sport for youth and a great outlet for kids."
