FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WJAC/AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins, 24, has died after being struck by a dump truck on an interstate in Broward County Fla., Florida Highway Patrol confirmed.
The news was first reported by his agent to ESPN Saturday morning.
Miami-area media outlets report the crash happened just before 7:00 a.m. Saturday in the westbound lanes of Interstate 595. Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda told the Associated Press he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Miranda didn’t say why the 24-year-old Haskins was on the highway at the time. The accident caused the highway to be shut down for several hours.
“He was just walking on the highway and got hit,” Miranda told The Associated Press.
ESPN reports Haskins was in Florida training with several Steelers players, including quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, running back Najee Harris and tight end Pat Freiermuth.
The Steelers confirmed the news a short time after the initial ESPN report. The team put out a statement from Head Coach Mike Tomlin who said he was "devastated and at a loss for words" as well as "truly heartbroken" by the news.
Haskins was a former Heisman Trophy candidate in college while at Ohio State and was drafted by Washington in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
After he struggled in his first two years in Washington, he was released and picked up by the Steelers before the 2021 season. Haskins was inactive for all but one game in 2021 and did not take a snap.
He signed a new contract with the team last month and had been considered an option to be the starting quarterback for the upcoming season prior to Tribusky's signing.
