STATE COLLEGE - According to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, the number of wineries in Pennsylvania has doubled since 2000, with total production increasing by 220 percent.
The State College Wegmans has now started selling wine from around the world, as well as local wineries.
The grocery store has been selling beer for quite some time, but store manager Adam Fleming said wine is something customers have expressed interest in for a while.
"This is something that our customers have been asking for for a very long time. We've been hearing about it ever since we started selling beer about 7 years ago. People have been asking us - 'When are you going to get wine? When are you going to get wine,” said Fleming.
After years of legislative debate, Pennsylvania passed a law in August allowing grocery stores to sell wine.
Fleming says they're glad to finally be able to offer this sought-after product.
"Anytime that we have an opportunity to improve customer convenience and variety and option, we're going to be in support of that," Fleming said.
Wine sales at the State College Wegmans are now in their second week.
Once all inventory is stocked, the store will offer 800 types of wine.
"We have wines from all over the world. Including a very large variety of local wineries from Pennsylvania," Fleming said.
6 News spoke with customers who were perusing the new section for the first time.
"I've been a Pennsylvania resident all my life and I just really think that we need to get into the modern world in terms of our beer and wine sales," said State College resident Jeanne Kitko.
"I'm very glad to see it. I think it's time to do that. I was very surprised when I walked in, I thought it was really nice," added Marie Leath.
The new Pennsylvania law does specify that wine cannot be mixed in with the rest of the grocery items.
In State College, the store transformed parts of its café section to create room for the wine.
